We are Bringing Top of the Line Osteoarthritis Treatment to Pueblo!

At Synergy Physical Therapy and Wellness, we’re proud to offer innovative and effective treatments to support our community’s health and wellness. Leading the way in arthritis care, we now offer an effective technique to treat osteoarthritis through the use of Periosteal Electrical Dry Needling (PEDN). This technique was developed by Physical Therapists to be an affordable, and highly effective approach for managing osteoarthritis pain.

How Does it Work?

PEDN offers a powerful non-pharmacological option to help individuals regain comfort and function in daily life. PEDN combines targeted dry needling with controlled electrical stimulation to promote healing in the periosteum—the tissue layer surrounding the bones as well as the nerves, muscles, tendons, and joints. This treatment decreases pain and inflammation, promotes blood flow, and helps to aid in promoting healing for improved function and mobility while treating osteoarthritis symptoms.

During each session, fine monofilament needles are inserted into specific points around the knee, followed by a gentle electrical current for 20–30 minutes. Clinical studies show that after 9 sessions, PEDN significantly reduced pain, stiffness, and disability associated with osteoarthritis (Dunning et al., 2018). Subsequent research by Dunning et al. has validated these techniques. By relieving pain and improving mobility, PEDN helps patients engage more successfully in exercise programs that support long-term joint health.

Our specialized treatment program is ideal for individuals who want to:

  • Reduce joint pain and stiffness
  • Prevent and manage joint inflammation
  • Avoid invasive surgeries
  • Maintain mobility and independence
  • Reverse secondary effects of osteoarthritis

Our Treatment Approach

Phase 1: Initial Evaluation & Personalized Treatment Plan

Your journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation by one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy. This assessment allows us to develop a personalized plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. This initial appointment will take 40 minutes. Wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes that allow for easy movement.

Phase 2: Restorative Treatment

During this phase, you will attend regular sessions focused on PEDN and some light exercise to help promote joint healing. The goals of this phase include:

  • Reduced pain and stiffness
  • Improved joint function and mobility
  • Increased strength and stability

You will also receive a customized home exercise program to support your recovery. If any exercises are causing or increasing pain, your therapist can modify them to ensure they are both effective and manageable.

Phase 3: Strength & Functional Reintegration

As your condition improves, clinic visits will become less frequent. The focus will shift to maintaining progress, reinforcing strength, and reintroducing activities you may have previously avoided due to pain or dysfunction.

Phase 4: Long-Term Management & Tune-Up Sessions

To ensure lasting results, we offer periodic maintenance sessions throughout the year. These “tune-ups” utilize PEDN and exercise progressions to optimize your long-term joint health.
